Business Description

Located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Shriver House Museum offers a unique perspective on the Battle of Gettysburg from the civilian point of view. The museum tells the story of the Shriver family, who lived in the house during the battle. George Shriver was serving in the Union army at the time, while his wife, Hettie, was left to worry about the safety of their two young daughters, Mollie and Sadie, as well as their home.

As Confederate soldiers filled the streets of town, Hettie sought refuge at her family's farm by Big Round Top. The empty Shriver house was commandeered by Confederates, who set up a sharpshooters' nest in the attic. At least two soldiers were killed in the attic before the Union army was able to recapture the house. The museum's tour guides, dressed in period attire, recount the harrowing story of the Shrivers as visitors walk from the Confederate sharpshooters' nest in the attic, through their finely-appointed home, to Shriver's Saloon in the cellar.

The house was abandoned for nearly 30 years before being painstakingly restored in 1996 by Nancie and her husband, Del. Today, the Shriver House Museum is a fascinating historical site that provides visitors with a glimpse into the civilian experience of the Battle of Gettysburg. The museum's exhibits include artifacts from the battle, as well as period furnishings and clothing. The museum offers guided tours, which are highly recommended, as the knowledgeable guides bring the story of the Shrivers and the battle to life.

Visitors to the Shriver House Museum can expect to leave with a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by civilians during the Civil War. The museum's focus on the experiences of the Shrivers provides a unique perspective on the battle and the human toll it took on all who were involved. A visit to the Shriver House Museum is a must for anyone interested in the history of the Civil War or the experiences of civilians during wartime.
