Business Description

J. Rickards Winery is a family-run business located in Cloverdale, California, at the northern end of the Alexander Valley. It is owned and operated by Jim and Eliza Rickards, who have been planting vineyards for over 30 years. The winery started in 2005, born out of the encouragement of friends who have enjoyed the small lots of hand-crafted wine they have been making since 1991.

The vineyards have been carefully tended and augmented over the years, with the original 1908 Zinfandel vines being joined by new Zinfandel vines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Malbec, and additional Bordeaux varieties. Today, all 45 acres of hillsides are covered with some of the best wine grapes in the county.

Jim Rickards had always wanted to be a farmer, and he got his wish after returning from his military service in 1969. Born and raised in San Francisco, he bought a cow and moved to Petaluma, where he leased property throughout Sonoma County and ran cattle. He also raised three children and worked full time at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital as an RN. With his free time, he finally bought property and revitalized an old vineyard. In 1976, he found the 60-acre Alexander Valley ranch on the east side of what was known as Chianti Mountain and built his house. Jim started by reviving the original Zinfandel vineyard, added new Zinfandel vines, and then added Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1991, when Eliza joined him, Jim added areas of Petite Sirah, Malbec, and other Bordeaux varieties.

The winery itself is a beautiful brown barn that was built on the property. The indoor and outdoor seating areas are comfortable and cozy, making it a perfect place to sit back and enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the stunning views. The staff at J.
