Originally known as the “North Main Street Well Field,” this property has been a source of hydraulic energy and drinking water for the City of Elkhart since the mid-1800s. Today, this private, 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization derives all operating capital, development costs, and endowments from private donations, earned revenue, memberships, and grants. The garden is open year-round and features activities such as special events, workshops, educational opportunities, summer concerts, winter wonderland holiday lights, and seasonal programming and exhibits.

Wellfield Botanic Gardens boasts a distinctive collection of 25 themed gardens and event spaces, a visitor center, and guest amenities. Visitors can take a stroll through the gardens and enjoy the sights and sounds of waterfalls, babbling brooks, and beautiful blooms. The garden's facilities may be rented for private events such as weddings, anniversaries, and celebrations of life.

The garden's rich history dates back to 2002, when the Elkhart Rotary Club conceived the gardens as a community service project to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary International. After planning and fundraising, the project was passed to the Board of Directors in 2005 to begin implementation of the Master Plan. Today, Eric Garton, a Pacific Northwest native formally trained as a Wildlife Biologist, serves as the Robert and Peggy Weed Executive Director at Wellfield Botanic Gardens.
