Located in Akron, Ohio, the Weathervane Playhouse is a fantastic community-based theater that has produced high-quality and diverse live productions for over 80 years. The theater is staffed entirely by volunteers who are passionate about theater arts and appreciation, and who work under professional direction to provide exceptional shows that engage and entertain the community.
Founded in 1935 and originally housed in a modest carriage house barn on Marshall Avenue in Akron, the Weathervane Playhouse has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The founders of the theater, four ladies who believed that Akron deserved the best in theater, produced everything from light comedy to Shakespeare and opera in those early years. Though the Barn is now only a memory, its rooftop weathervane gave the theater its name and logotype character, the Chanticleer Rooster.
Currently located in Akron, the Weathervane Playhouse is one of the foremost community-based playhouses in the country that serves a region through theater. The enthusiastic commitment of hundreds of volunteers who devote their time, talent and treasure in a uniquely rewarding environment is what makes the Weathervane Playhouse truly special.
