How does a business school dean end up running an art gallery/gift shop?
This mission and passion for art might seem ironic from a career numbers guy. Sears retired in 2015 as dean of the University of Findlay College of Business. Before that, he was the business college dean at Ashland University. Before his career as an academic, Sears was an international banker. As a banker in London nearly 50 years ago, the Miami, Florida, native unexpectedly fell in love with art.
"When I moved to London, I suddenly realized the architecture in Miami is crap, at least when I was growing up," Sears said. "Concrete block homes. I grew up in one of those. No design elegance at all. But in London," he said, "there are these be-eeauu-tiful properties. I ended up living in one of those," Sears said. "So it sort of sensitized me to a whole different way of living."
