Business Description
Fourth-generation rancher George McArthur knows it's important to know your land. He ranches, grows crops, and owns a store, McArthur Farm Supply, in the small town that bears his last name. "Certain parts of the ranches are suitable for different things," McArthur says. Crop consultants on staff at his store help him figure out what to grow and where. McArthur's great-grandfather, John McArthur, came to the Fall River Valley in about 1880, started in the dried goods business and ended up ranching. Today George works almost 40,000 acres, operating a cow-calf ranch. The family opened the store in 1965 and McArthur bought out his relatives in 1991. Recently he converted some of his land to wetlands to collect tailwater from his other operations and provide habitat for numerous wildlife species, recycle water and keep the ranch green. "We're very nature aware, but it works both ways," McArthur says. "We have some pastures where we don't use chemicals, but we use them where we need them."
