This historic property dates back to at least 1891 when two Swiss families settled at this site in Newton County, and it has always been an oasis for travelers. In horse and buggy days, travelers would stop to rest and fill their water barrels before continuing on their journey. It took three days to travel the 18 miles from Jasper to Harrison, and Little Switzerland was always the first stop before heading out over the rugged mountain terrain.

Over the years, Little Switzerland has undergone many changes, including a complete rebuild of its cabins to the most modern standards. But one thing that hasn't changed is the tradition of hospitality that guests still enjoy here. Nancy and Butch Atkinson have been successfully running Little Switzerland since 1989, when they took over from his parents who purchased the property in 1961.
