Upon his return from the Merchant Marine in the late 1940s, Max and his wife Juanita took over the donut bakery from his father and began Krumpe's Do-Nut Shop.

Krumpe's Do-Nut Shop began by making the donuts at night and delivering them in the morning to local stores. With the help of the family, they were able to build a great reputation and expand their delivery routes throughout Washington County. Eventually, customers began knocking on the door of the bakery wanting a fresh hot glazed donut. The "little donut shop in the alley" became a local tradition. Max and Juanita operated Krumpe's Do-Nut Shop for over fifty years until Max's death in 2000. Max's sons, Rudolph and Fred Krumpe, began running the business in 2000 as Krumpe's Do-Nut Shop, Inc. In 2001, Rudolph's son Max joined the family business.
