Founded over 20 years ago, City Grind has been a staple in the Seattle coffee scene. Jon, the morning barista, bought the business with his friend Rick in 1993. At the time it was a cart on 5th Ave. in front of the church between Columbia and Madison streets. After 10 years there, the church's ownership changed hands and the lease ended. When the new Seattle City Hall opened, Jon and Rick were invited to move inside and serve coffee from there.

Today, City Grind is co-owned by Jon and Charlie, who has been working in Seattle coffee shops at various times since 1995. Charlie first moved to Seattle in 1995 and immediately became the cliche Seattle transplant: He got a job in coffee. A few years later he figured he ought to get a real job and immediately started missing coffee. Fast forward 15 years. Now he's got a business plan for his own cafe when Jon approaches him about becoming a partner in City Grind. Thankfully, that came together and now Charlie is back in coffee, where he belongs.

The ambience of City Grind is warm and inviting, with plenty of seating options for solo coffee breaks or for groups to gather and chat. The staff is always friendly and quickly get to know customers by name, creating a sense of community that is at the heart of everything City Grind does.
