He graduated from art schools in New York, where he studied photography, painting, sculpture, and commercial illustration. To support his art, Steve cooked for 15 years from New York to Santa Fe to Colorado.

Finally, in 2002, Steve caught the wine bug while working at a Salida winery, Mountain Spirit Winery. In 2004, he formed a group of grape stompers who got together every harvest to foot-stomp Colorado red grapes. One barrel led to another, until, in 2009, Steve officially formed Vino Salida Wine Cellars in the beautiful Colorado mountain town of Salida.
