Birgit was born in Krefeld, Germany, and moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1981. She attended KSU and GSU and got her degree in Business Marketing. She worked in the Retail/Fashion Management industry for a few years before raising a family in Roswell. Birgit broadened her horizon into holistic medicine by working with an alternative clinic in Roswell.
