Thompson Building Materials was founded in 1962 in the (then) rural Southern California town of Tustin, approximately 35 miles south of downtown Los Angeles by Ken Thompson. The company has grown more than eightfold since its humble beginnings. As the company grew, so did its offerings. Demand increased, and more and more square footage was dedicated to showcase the variety of building materials that builders, contractors, architects, designers, and homeowners were requesting.

Derek Pritchett, Vice President & General Manager of San Diego, started as a forklift operator in Orange County almost 25 years ago. With no prior knowledge of or experience w/ building materials, he started asking contractors questions about the different materials. Moving to inside sales, Derek began learning about product pricing, but more importantly, how to sell them. This became invaluable when after graduating from California State Fullerton, owner Ken Thompson asked him to be a sales rep. for the company. A few years later, at 27, Derek landed in San Diego where he lives & is proud to call home. Having started @ the bottom, he appreciates & respects the hard work & long hours his employees give him. Learning, understanding & satisfying a project's needs is his daily inspiration. Derek loves being part of the creative & involved in material selection w/ anyone they service including; the public, contractors, builders architects & the design community.
