The Ensemble Theatre, located in the heart of Houston, Texas, is a cultural institution dedicated to preserving African American artistic expression. Founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins, the theatre has grown from a touring company operating from the trunk of Mr. Hawkins' car, to one of Houston's finest and largest African American theatres. It is a place where artists and the larger community can receive technical training, have expanded employment opportunities, and provide a theatrical education for Houstonians and residents in surrounding counties.
The Ensemble Theatre is one of the only professional theatres in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience. It is the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest and holds the distinction of being one of the nation's largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house.
The core audience of The Ensemble Theatre is African American, but its programs and operations benefit a multicultural audience that is diverse in age, income, ethnicity, and culture. The theatre produces a Mainstage Season of six contemporary and classical works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists.
Under the artistic leadership of Eileen J. Morris, The Ensemble Theatre has produced over 78 productions, which include four world premieres and 57 regional premieres. Morris, who worked closely with the founder of the theatre, George W. Hawkins, from 1982 until his death in 1990, has been featured in Women In Theatre Magazine and is a conversationalist with Table Talk through the University of Houston's 2011 Women's Studies Department.
In addition to its Mainstage Season, The Ensemble Theatre's Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, artist-in-residence experiences, and live performances for students both off-site and at the theatre. The Ensemble Theatre's Young Performers Program is also designed to offer a challenging and rewarding theatre experience for youth of all ages and backgrounds.
