Nestled in the heart of Nashville, The Cookery is a nonprofit restaurant and cafe that is making a true difference in the lives of local homeless men. This eatery is a unique and inviting space that offers a flavorful menu of salads, burgers, sandwiches, and loaded potatoes, along with an espresso bar and dessert menu.
But The Cookery is so much more than just a place to grab a delicious bite to eat. Founded in 2009, this establishment is the brainchild of Brett Swayn and Terry Kemper, who created the Upper Room with friends and area churches. In the beginning, the program fed and sheltered six homeless men in a church gymnasium. Today, the program welcomes as many as 90 homeless men twice a week, providing them with a hot meal and a safe place to sleep.
Out of that initial program, Lambscroft Ministries was born. This movement now includes the establishment of two Discipleship Houses, occupied by formerly homeless men seeking spiritual study and community. In the kitchen of The Cookery, Brett instills culinary crafts to select homeless men, preparing them for employment in Nashville's food industry.
