Business Description

The Taft Museum of Art, located in the heart of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a small but exquisite museum that boasts a collection of over 700 works of art. The museum is housed in a registered National Historic Landmark that was built in 1820 by Martin Baum, Cincinnati's first millionaire. The house was later owned by the Sinton and Taft families, who were known for their collection of fine and decorative art.

The collection at the Taft Museum features paintings from well-known artists such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and John Singer Sargent. Also included in the collection are eight landscape murals by African-American painter Robert S. Duncanson, a large group of Renaissance enamels, and 49 master watches from the 17th- through 19th-centuries. The museum also displays Chinese ceramics and works of art dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

One of the standout pieces in the collection is a Virgin and Child, an ivory sculpture of the Virgin holding the Christ child from about 1260-80. The museum is also home to early-19th-century American furniture, including examples of Federal-period (neo-classical) chairs, sofas and tables that date between 1800 and 1830.

The Taft Museum of Art has an impressive history of loaning pieces from its collection to other museums. Works from the Taft's collection have traveled extensively to appear in special exhibitions and museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Musée du Louvre, Paris; The National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Tate Britain, London; and The Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

The museum's CEO, Deborah Emont Scott, is a graduate of Livingston College, Rutgers University and has an M.A. in art history from Oberlin College. She has served in curatorial positions at the Memphis Brooks Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Taft Museum of Art is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and those interested in history. The museum's collection is both beautiful and educational, showcasing the finest in fine and decorative art.
