Sassafras, an Art, Craft & Antique Cooperative, is located in an 1892 Historic Building in Downtown Kalispell, Montana. This unique and charming store features the work of 35 local and Montana artists, including photography, watercolors, batik, silk painting, oil paintings, pottery, hand-blown glass, woodturning, handmade soaps, jewelry, mosaics, silk and velvet scarves, hats, placemats and napkins, aprons, pillowcases, hank knit children's clothing, metal sculpture, Montana rock oil candles, and lazy susans, painted furniture, painted brooms, cards, and gifts. All of these beautiful and one-of-a-kind pieces are displayed amongst antique and vintage furniture and collectibles, creating a shopping experience like no other.

Sassafras was started in 2002 by a group of 10 artists, and today, the store is still staffed by artists who know their work and the work of others, making it a personalized shopping experience. Sometimes, visitors to the store can even see an artist at work. Sassafras is always changing and growing, with new work from current artists and new artists joining.

Susan, one of the artists at Sassafras, has been creating most of her life. In 1981, she took a Stained Glass class, which evolved into creating jewelry from vintage china dishes, sandwiching a variety of items, including vintage lace and postage stamps, between glass to create pins and necklaces. She has since added jewelry from silverware and china mosaics to her creations. Susan also paints on a variety of wooden furniture and has added painting on vintage upholstered pieces. Being a part of and managing Sassafras is a dream come true for Susan and all the other artists involved.
