San Jose Dance Theatre was founded in 1964 as Paul E. Curtis Jr.'s Los Gatos Academy of Dance and the West Valley Ballet Foundation. This nonprofit, educational organization was renamed as San Jose Dance Theatre in 1965 and incorporated in 1968. Across more than 57 years, SJDT has trained dancers for a lifetime of participation in, as well as appreciation of the art of classical ballet. Many of its alumni have gone on to professional careers in dance.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Foehringer, San Jose Dance Theatre is committed to maintaining excellence in classical ballet and contemporary dance training in their school, pre-professional programs, and professional ballet company. Foehringer, who has been part of the dance industry for over four decades, is a director, choreographer, master teacher, producer, and mentor, who trained at Centro de Dança e Artes Integradas in São Paulo, Brazil. He is a founding member of Cisne Negro Dance Company in São Paulo and toured with them throughout South America and Europe for ten years before returning to the US.

SJDT has presented many classic ballets to Bay Area audiences, including Peter and the Wolf, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and its renowned production of "The Nutcracker." Now in its 57th year, the 2022 The Original San Jose Nutcracker will run two weekends in December at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. SJDT's productions are imaginative and inventive, reflecting the artistic visions of its dancers and choreographers.
