Since opening in 1993, owners Mark and Janet Shipley have dedicated themselves to providing their customers with an unparalleled shopping experience. Mark and Janet are both Arizona natives and have a deep connection to the culture and traditions of the Southwest. Janet is a fifth-generation "Indian Trader" and a descendant of David Babbitt, one of the founding fathers of Flagstaff. Her passion for Native American art and culture is evident in every corner of the store.

The store's history is rooted in the Shipley's desire to support local artisans. Originally, Painted Desert Trading Company was a bead and craft supply store, but as demand grew, Mark and Janet expanded their offerings to include finished jewelry and crafts. In 1998, they opened a small gallery in downtown Flagstaff, and the business took off from there. Today, after two expansions and relocations, the gallery resides at 18 N San Francisco St.
