Founded by Marty Lagina, Mari Vineyards is named after his grandmother, Teresa Mari, who migrated from Italy and made wine in her home in Michigan's upper peninsula. Marty Lagina's vision for Mari Vineyards was to grow grapes that shouldn't have grown in Michigan and produce world-class wines that otherwise couldn't be made here. And true to his vision, Mari Vineyards produces a wide variety of red wines unlike anything else produced in Michigan.

The team at Mari Vineyards is led by Winemaker Sean O'Keefe, who joined the team in 2009, coming from his family's neighboring winery. The Lagina family began planting on Old Mission Peninsula in 1999, starting with their Jamieson Vineyard. They began producing wine in 2005 and operated Mari as a smaller scale winery until May 2016, when their new tasting room and production facility opened.
