Brian was the first graduate of UH Hilo to earn a degree in Art. He began his career in design and preservation at the Lyman Museum, first as the Exhibits Designer, and then as Curator of Exhibits and Collections. In 1988, Brian started his own business, Island Visual Design; later renamed Island ImageWorks. In 2005, Brian launched Tanimoto Gallery & Framing, which continued his commitment of caring for artwork and preservation of personal possessions. Besides adding the new service of photo restoration, it also featured a gallery of Asian-influenced art and some wabi-sabi inspirational artwork, which marked the beginning of his new venture. After 25 years in the field of custom framing, art preservation and sales, Brian has found a new voice in "Life is Wabi-Sabi," a businesss that reflects his current philosophy in life. Always the perfectionist, Brian learned to embrace the concept of wabi-sabi, the view of life that finds beauty in things imperfect, incomplete, and impermanent.
