Nestled in the heart of Richmond, Virginia lies the picturesque Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. This outdoor attraction spanning 50 acres of beautifully manicured gardens offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Originally owned by Patrick Henry, the property was once a Powhatan Indian hunting ground before being acquired by Lewis Ginter in 1884. Ginter, a prominent Richmond businessman, built the Lakeside Wheel Club, originally a one-story structure that was later expanded and incorporated into the Bloemendaal House. The Wheel Club was a popular destination for Richmond bicyclists.
In 1913, Ginter's niece, Grace Arents purchased the Lakeside Wheel Club and transformed it into a convalescent home for sick children from the city. Arents moved into the house with her companion, Mary Garland Smith, and lived there until her death.
The property was later taken over by the city of Richmond, and in 1981, a group of botanists, horticulturists, and citizens formed Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Inc. A lawsuit ensued, but an amicable settlement allowed the formation of the garden, which was chartered by court decree in 1984, in line with Arents' wishes.
Today, visitors can explore the garden's many wonders, including a butterfly exhibit, a rose garden, a children's garden with a fully accessible treehouse, and much more. Visitors can also take a guided tour or attend a variety of events and festivals throughout the year, such as the "Million Blooms" display in the spring.
