Business Description

Nestled in the charming town of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, lies a hidden gem that is a must-visit for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike. The Ephrata Cloister, founded in 1732, was a protestant monastic community established by German immigrants who sought spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Today, it stands as a testament to their faith and determination.

The Cloister, which spans 28 acres, offers daily tours for visitors to explore the historic site. The guided tour lasts approximately one hour and begins with a 15-minute orientation video. Visitors can also view the seven historic buildings before or after the tour. However, the Saron (Sisters' House) and Saal (Meetinghouse) are only available for viewing during the tour.

The site also includes a self-guided exhibit in the Visitor Center, which provides insights into the history of the Cloister and its inhabitants. Visitors are encouraged to plan to spend at least an hour and a half at the site, and there are ample picnic tables and free parking available.

Restoration work on the nine surviving original buildings began in 1941 and was led by architect G. Edwin Brumbaugh. Today, the National Historic Landmark is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates.

Visitors will be transported back in time as they walk through the gates of the Cloister. The rustic buildings and serene surroundings provide a glimpse into the past, and the knowledgeable tour guides bring the history to life. Even without the tour, the Cloister's architectural beauty and tranquil ambiance are worth the visit.

Reviews from visitors rave about the experience, with many stating the tour is a must-do to truly appreciate the site's history and significance. The Ephrata Cloister is a fascinating destination that should not be missed by anyone visiting the area.
