Located in Berkeley, California, the Crowden Music Center is a non-profit organization that provides music education for students of all ages and levels of ability. The center was founded in 1983 by Scottish violinist Anne Crowden with just thirteen students meeting in a church basement. Today, the center is a Berkeley institution and has become a hub for music education in the community.
At the heart of Crowden's education philosophy is chamber music. The center believes that chamber music provides students with the tools to develop and express their musical independence while also teaching them the sensitivity to play as part of a team. Through chamber music, students become part of a musical tradition and experience that is larger than any individual. This approach to music education has enabled Crowden to become a distinguished coeducational day school for grades 3-8.
In addition to the coeducational day school, the center offers a variety of other music programs. These programs include early childhood music classes, private lessons on a variety of instruments, Crowden Children's Chorus, Crowden Chamber Singers, beginning piano and music fundamentals, Suzuki Strings, preparatory string ensemble, chamber orchestra, chamber ensembles for youth and adults, John Adams Young Composers Program, Sundays @ Four chamber music concerts, Mancini Lecture Series, and Community Music Day. All of these programs are open to music students of all ages and levels of ability.
The center is run by Executive and Artistic Director, Doris Fukawa. Fukawa, a well-known Bay Area violinist and educator, has deep roots in the center. She attended kindergarten through second grade right there on Crowden's campus at the old Jefferson School. Fukawa's connection to the center and the community is what makes her the perfect leader for this organization. She actively teaches and conducts both at Crowden and beyond, including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-college Division and in her private Oakland studio.
In summary, the Crowden Music Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing music education for students of all ages and levels of ability. The center's unique approach to music education through chamber music has made it a distinguished coeducational day school for grades 3-8. Additionally, the center offers a variety of other music programs that are open to music students of all ages and levels of ability. With its deep roots in the community, the Crowden Music Center is the perfect place to come and sing and play.
