Business Description

The Chicago Humanities Festival is a celebration of the questions that shape and define us as individuals, communities, and cultures. For the past 25 years, this festival has brought together some of the world's most brilliant minds to engage with curious individuals from all walks of life. With vibrant year-round programming and a robust Fall Festival, the Chicago Humanities Festival is a vital presenting organization in one of the most culturally rich cities in the world.

Located in the heart of Chicago, the festival collaborates with leading arts, cultural, and educational organizations to present scholars, artists, architects, thinkers, theologians, and policy makers who change how we see the world, where we're from, and where we're going. The festival's Executive Director Phillip Bahar, Marilynn Thoma Artistic Director Jonathan Elmer, and Associate Artistic Director Alison Cuddy have worked tirelessly to ensure that the festival continues to be one of Chicago's most vital events.

The Chicago Humanities Festival began in 1989 as a dream shared by a determined group of Chicago cultural leaders eager to extend the riches of the humanities to all who might benefit. Under the aegis of the Illinois Humanities Council and its then-chairman Richard J. Franke, the notion of a "humanities day" was proposed and then expanded into a "festival." The first Chicago Humanities Festival, a one-day affair, was held on November 11, 1990, at the Art Institute of Chicago and Orchestra Hall, before an audience of 3,500 people. Eight thoughtful yet accessible programs addressed the theme Expressions of Freedom, including a memorable keynote address by playwright Arthur Miller.

The festival's Marilynn Thoma Artistic Director, Jonathan Elmer, brings more than 25 years of experience in public programming, musical performance, and teaching to the festival. Elmer is a professor of English at Indiana University, Bloomington and director of the College Arts and Humanities Institute. He has published widely on all periods of American culture and literature, and is a leading expert on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. His current research explores how the notion of "play" fundamentally transformed the art, culture, and business of the 20th century.

If you're a curious individual looking to engage with some of the most exciting thinkers in the world, the Chicago Humanities Festival is an event you don't want to miss. With a wide array of public lectures, exhibitions, and performances, this festival is a celebration of ideas in the context of civic life.
