With 30 years experience in the moving business in 1985 our salesmen came to me and said, "We could book so much more business if we did not have to charge so much for packing service and packing materials.
Since the moving industry was regulated by the PUC and the ICC at that time, we could not deviate from the rates in the published tariffs.
At that time there were no box stores. We thought. "Hmmm? what if we opened a small retail store to sell boxes and packing supplies separate and apart from the moving company?"
We opened the first Box City store at that time never thinking it would turn our to be a business. We thought it would be an expense that would increase our revenue in moving.
It turned out to be an instant success, and such a "fun" business that we sold the moving company and just started opening more Box City stores.
